You reading my post about Maslow’s Theory of Needs, in which I explains the hierarchy of needs being a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid.

This post samples out by stating and explaining Maslow’s Theory of Needs and how they affect or relate to the everyday living of us as humans.

You’d realize needs are things that make us live a satisfied or healthy life or even things that make us survive. Needs are on a higher scale than wants. In terms of distinguishing the two.

In the case of need, the outcome is dysfunction or death. The word need is synonymous as a requirement, essential, wish or demand.

Needs are the essential things in life, whereas wants are everything that helps complete life as a whole.

Theory of Needs

In Psychology, the Theory of Needs was developed by Maslow – Abraham Maslow. It argues that there are five stages of human needs that motivate our human behaviors.

In 1943, Abraham Maslow proposed this theory after studying what he called ’exemplary people’ such as Einstein.

He represented them in a pyramid with the more basic need at the bottom.

  1. The Physiological needs: These are the essential basic needs you need to survive in life. Ever seen the face of a hungry person, be it a child, a teenager, an adult or a matured individual? Or have you looked at the eyes or face of a sleepy person or even someone who is really thirsty?? What does that entirely tell you about life??? Can you tell from the actions of the person that without that immediate satisfaction, nothing else matters? Think about these needs which include; breath, drink, eat, or even sleep. Mahatma Gandhi famously said,”To a hungry man, a piece of bread is the face of God”. ”A hungry man can’t see right or wrong. He just sees food” quoting the late Pearl S. Buck. You realize these needs are universal. We all do one or two of them at the same time, but eventually, we do all now or later. The moment you get enough of these needs, you get motivated by the next thing,…>
  2. >..now we want safety. Safety needs results in you trying to earn money, build your resources to safeguard your future or look for shelter that protects you against dangers. ’Ever notice the intense feeling you get when you separate from friends or get off the Uber after a late-night party and you’re all alone walking to your house? Subconsciously, you walk briskly just to get to your destination, because you mostly don’t feel safe. Now imagine this -you have a home and still feel this way for only a brief period.., what about the homeless.., ever wondered how they generally feel’? Well, in this same safety needs space, we also tend to seek employment and seek to improve our health too. After a while motivation increases to attain the next satisfaction, which is…>
  3. ..Love/Belonging: Some people can practically find happiness being alone, but arguably it’s not a long-run surety that loneliness won’t set in. When it does, they desire to be close to family and friends. As we all do. We desire to belong to a society or a gang. We desire friendships and intimacy and to a larger sense, we desire the sense of connection. On the other hand, in terms of belonging, the moment we join a group, we already wish to, for lack of better choice of words, ”distant” or ”distinguish” ourselves from everyone else, so we look to..>
  4. ..Self-esteem: Ralph Smart asks, ’Are you someone who allows other people to give you value?’ If you’re that type of person, we at AFFAIRS edge you to not seek the acceptance or approval of others and hold yourself worthy. Now, when we get to this level of attaining individual satisfaction, we begin to be more self-confident and demand respect or try to gain recognition from our peers. Motivation to perform and compete is now at it’s highest. We seem to want to change our state, moving to a next or higher levels bettering ourselves or changing our entire individual vibe. This is how come everyone including students, sportsmen, and inventors excel because self-esteem is how you see yourself, ..is how you value yourself.
  5. Certainly, many subjectivities think that the good life consists of something subtle than happiness; well-being or Self-Actualization, for example. This is the realization of one’s talents and potentialities, esp. considered as a drive or need present in everyone. The Oxford dictionary labeled the word a noun and states that it’s the fact of using our skills and abilities and achieving as much as we can possibly achieve. A person’s desire to use all their abilities to achieve and be everything that they possibly can. Now, you can relax and be creative. Accept facts for whatever they are. Give back or do whatever you want to do. This is when you desire to become the most that you can be. No more pressure, unless of course, there’s trouble below.

In this mix, poverty makes it difficult for some people to have their dignity, even as individuals. For their ends to meet their needs is next to impossible to a broader view. They go through life ending up miserable.

To this effect, we are teased to requote Alux, ”You’re the sum of the choices you’ve made until this point in life..”, but it’s just so unfortunate how people are blindsided by the turnout of certain events that makes them go down below the poverty line and as such, they can’t attain most of the above-stated needs.

Once you are successful by attaining all the above needs, you get to the realization that…

..happiness is a flow of life.

In effect, everyone agrees to the terms that these needs and feelings are natural and that we are able to accept them, adjust ourselves to handle or deal or better still approach them with the preparation or a better mindset when the need arises.
